Over 30 years ago, a young social worker, now Assemblyman Vito J. Lopez, became the director of an HRA-operated senior center in Bushwick. As this single-focused program became a thriving center for community senior citizens, it became the root of a broad-based multi-service non-profit agency, the RBSCC which, today, proudly operates six senior centers. Although each of our centers has a distinct personality, all share a common mission: they seek to enhance the lives of senior citizens, aged 60 and over, through the provision of social services and advocacy and endeavors to facilitate social interaction and companionship through the provision of recreational, cultural, and educational activities. Underlying all our senior services is the belief that the senior population of any community is a source of wisdom and guidance and, as such, should be treasured.

The Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Center has been in operation since 1970. Under the direction of founding director Vito Lopez, the center became the hub of community activity and ultimately, gave rise the RBSCC as a significant community social service provider. The center continues to be a focal point in the community and in the lives of its members.

The Hope Gardens Multi-Service Center began as a very small out-station site in 1981. In the years since then, the center has become an integral part of a thriving community and now serves both the young and old. The day at Hope Gardens begins early in the morning and extends well into the night, on most days.

The Borinquen Plaza Senior Center has been operational since 1965 and came under the sponsorship of the RBSCC in 1994 and has been a long history of serving Latino seniors.

Named in honor of a dedicated and loyal advocate of senior citizens and their issues, the Diana H. Jones Senior Center has a long history of serving the Williamsburg and Greenpoint communities. Operational since 1969, the center came under the sponsorship of the RBSCC in 1997.

Formerly run by the NYC Human Resources Administration, the Atlantic Senior Center came under the sponsorship of the RBSCC in 1992. The center extends our services to Community Board 5—East New York—in Brooklyn.

The Roundtable Senior Center is the newest multi-purpose senior center to join the RBSCC senior services. Although it came under the sponsorship of the RBSCC in 2005, the center was founded in 1973 and has a proud history of serving African American senior citizens from all over Brooklyn.

The services offered at our senior centers vary to some degree. We advise contacting the center in which you are interested to better determine if the services there will meet your needs. Our services include:

Nutritional Services: Breakfast and lunch meals are served from Monday through Friday to seniors who attend the centers. For homebound senior citizens who are unable to cook and prepare their own meals and who do not receive home care services in excess of 19 hours per week, the center delivers daily lunch meals Monday through Sunday. Some sites provide homebound meals that are served on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Health Services: Screenings are provided on a regular basis by a physician. In addition, the centers host lectures and discussions on a variety of health-related topics such as Alzheimer's, high blood pressure, pain management, eye care, hearing, nutrition, etc. Blood pressure, blood sugar level, vision, and other general screenings are conducted monthly. Podiatry visits are made on a weekly basis. Several centers offer walking clubs as a fun way to get regular exercise. Classes are available to educate seniors on the prevention of falls and fractures as well as to alleviate back and neck pain. Finally, some centers conduct annual health fairs which bring together health and medical professionals and services in order to facilitate the well-being of seniors.

Social Services: Case assistance, counseling, and advocacy are provided to seniors on all entitlements including Social Security, food stamps, Medicare, Medicare D, Medicaid, Senior Citizen Rent Exemptions (SCRIE), and Heat Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). Information, counseling, assistance, and referrals are also provided in the areas of housing, immigration and citizenship, and other legal issues.

Recreational and Educational Services: The centers offer a wide array of recreational and educational services including: dancing, arts and crafts, painting, sewing, choral group, billiards, dominoes, classes in English as a Second Language, Tai-Chi, yoga, computer literacy, and exercise/movement. Additionally, a variety of day trips are scheduled frequently.

Parties and Special Events: The centers host monthly birthday parties to honor members. The parties feature live music, dancing, and refreshments and all are welcome to enjoy the festivities. Seasonal holiday parties include Three King's Day, Chinese New Year, New Year's, Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween, Mother's Day, and Father's Day.

Additional Services at the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Center:

Transportation Services: Transportation to and from the center is provided on a daily basis to those members who require assistance. Additionally, the center will arrange for car service to those who require transportation to medical appointments, hospitals, and other activities. This service is available on an as-needed basis.

Newsletter: The center publishes its own monthly newsletter, "The Stanhope Standard" which allows seniors to contribute short stories, poems, jokes, puzzles, etc. It also provides a variety of information on senior issues and community events, the schedule of the center's events for the month, and the month's menu.

Intergenerational Services: The Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Center operates an Intergenerational Program through which students assist senior citizens with such daily living activities as shopping, snow removal, and escort to and from appointments. Young people also provide much-needed companionship and telephone reassurance.

Community Services: The center provides space for many a vast array of community meetings.

Summer Picnics: In an effort to give seniors a relaxing and enjoyable day out of the city, the RBSCC sponsors two annual picnics at Sunken Meadow State Park. Nearly 10,000 senior citizens participate in July and August of each year. The picnics are provided at absolutely no cost to the seniors and operate exclusively with the assistance of staff and community volunteers. Lunch and dinner, complete with dessert, are served. Recreational activities and live entertainment are available throughout the day.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Day Celebrations: Decades ago, founder Vito Lopez became cognizant of the fact that holidays are very lonely and sad times for the elderly in our community. To prevent seniors from having to go through the holidays alone, he began annual Thanksgiving and Christmas D ay celebrations at the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Center. On Thanksgiving, an elaborate turkey dinner with all the trimmings is cooked and served by staff and community volunteers. Dancing and live music further the festive mood. In addition, homebound seniors, living nearby, who are unable to attend the center, receive the same special holiday meal. On Christmas, a special full- course meal is prepared and served, again by staff and community volunteers. Through year-round fund-raising efforts, the RBSCC ensures that each senior attending the celebration receives a gift from Santa Claus, who always makes a guest appearance. Homebound seniors receive gifts along with their holiday meals as well.
